Virtual Machines We recommend using a virtual machine program, ideally or, to run Windows applications on a Mac without rebooting. For maximum performance, which is particularly necessary for gaming, we recommend instead. A is one of the best ways to run Windows desktop software.

They allow you to install Windows and other operating systems in a window on your Mac desktop. Windows will think it’s running on a real computer, but it’s actually running inside a piece of software on your Mac. You don’t have to use your Windows program in the virtual machine window, either—many virtual machine programs allow you to so they can appear on your Mac desktop. However, they’re still running inside the virtual machine in the background.

You’ll need a Windows license to install Windows in a virtual machine. If you already have a product key, you can download and install it in a virtual machine program. You can also use the completely free and open-source, but its 3D graphics support and Mac operating system integration aren’t as good. Parallels and VMWare Fusion both, so you can try all these programs and decide which is best for you. Note: We don’t often recommend paid software, but in the case of, it’s something we use at How-To Geek every single day for testing software and running Windows.

The integration with macOS is amazingly well done, and the speed blows away VirtualBox. In the long run, the price is well worth it. There’s one big downside to virtual machines: 3D graphics performance isn’t amazing, so this isn’t the best way to run Windows games on your Mac.

Yes, it can work—especially with older games—but you won’t get the best performance, even in an ideal situation. Many games, especially newer ones, will be unplayable.

That’s where the next option comes into play. Boot Camp RELATED: Apple’s allows you to. Only one operating system can be running at a time, so you’ll have to restart your Mac to switch between macOS and Windows. If you’ve ever, it’s just like that. Installing Windows as a real operating system on your Mac is the best idea if you want to play Windows games or use demanding applications that need all the performance they can get.

When you install Windows on your Mac, you’ll be able to use Windows and Windows applications with the maximum possible performance. Your Mac will perform as well as a Windows PC with the same specifications. The downside here is that you can’t run macOS applications and Windows applications side-by-side at the same time. If you just want to run a Windows desktop application alongside your Mac applications, a virtual machine will probably be ideal. On the other hand, if you want to play the latest Windows games on your Mac, Boot Camp will be ideal.

As with virtual machines, you’ll need a Windows license to install Windows on your Mac. Wine RELATED: Wine originated on. It’s a compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to run on other operating systems. Essentially, Wine is an attempt to rewrite the Windows code that applications depend on so they can run on other operating systems. This means that Wine is nowhere near perfect. It won’t run every Windows application, and will have bugs with many of them.

The can give you some idea of which applications are supported, although it focuses on Linux support. Nevertheless, Wine is one way to try running Windows applications on a Mac. Because it doesn’t require you actually use Windows, you don’t need a Windows license to use Wine. It’s completely free.

CrossOver Mac is a paid application that will run Windows programs on Mac. It uses the open-source Wine code to accomplish this, but CrossOver provides a nice graphical interface and focuses on officially supporting popular programs. If an officially supported program doesn’t work, you can contact CodeWeavers and expect them to make it work for you. CodeWeavers contributes their improvements back to the open-source Wine project, so paying for CrossOver Mac also helps the Wine project itself. CrossOver offers a free trial it you want to try it out first. You can also before buying.

While CrossOver focuses on compatibility, it’s still based on Wine, and won’t work with everything. Most people will probably be happiest going for a virtual machine program and a Windows license. With CrossOver, you don’t need to run a Windows virtual machine—but, if you do run a Windows virtual machine, you’ll be able to run almost any Windows program with less risk of bugs. CrossOver does theoretically allow you to run Windows PC games on a Mac with better performance than you’d get in a virtual machine, but you’ll risk running into bugs and unsupported programs. Boot Camp may still be a better solution for that. Remote Desktop RELATED: If you already have a Windows system, you could skip running Windows software on your Mac completely and to access the Windows machine from your Mac’s desktop.

Organizations with business software that runs on Windows can host Windows servers and make their applications available to Macs, Chromebooks, Linux PCs, iPads, Android tablet, and other devices. If you’re just a home user who also has a Windows PC, you could configure that Windows PC for remote access and connect to it whenever you need a Windows application. Bear in mind that this isn’t ideal for visually intensive applications like PC games. If you’re a Chrome user, you can even to connect to a Windows PC running Chrome from your Mac running Chrome. All these tricks obviously require more work than simply installing a Windows program on a Windows PC.

If you have a Mac, you should focus on using Mac software when possible. Windows programs won’t be as integrated or work as well. You may have to buy a Windows license for your Mac to get the best compatibility, whether you’re using a virtual machine or installing Windows in Boot Camp. This company has brought us Cuphead: Don’t Deal With the Devil, and it’s one of the trippiest combat-based 2D platformers we’ve seen in a long time. Designed to retain the look and sounds of vintage cartoons, Cuphead tasks you (and potentially a partner in local co-op) with clearing out strange and violent worlds as you seek to pay back your debt to the devil. Expect plenty of boss battles. 88 Metascore Action No Yes. Adventure Return of the Obra Dinn The Obra Dinn, a merchant ship carrying over 200 tons of trade goods, was declared lost at sea in 1802. In 1807, it drifted ashore with damaged sails and no crew.

You play an insurance investigator dispatched to assess the damage, but of course there’s also a pretty big mystery to solve here. The most striking thing about the Return of the Obra Dinn, though, is the manner in which the game is depicted; the entire game is painstakingly created in stippled black-and-white graphics like the games we played on our Mac SEs. As such, pick up the first two entries in this Norse mythology-inspired game if you haven’t already, because actions and results carry over from one to the other. If you have already played them, you don’t need us to tell you to grab The Banner Saga 3; you’re already playing it. 83 Metascore 7/26/2018 Role-Playing No No. Racing Guts and Glory Perhaps nothing better exemplifies family bonding than racing together through “obstacle courses of death,” so why not participate in Guts and Glory? This game show basically throws myriad hazards at you (such as saw blades, spikes, and explosives) as you race along a defined track in an attempt to survive with at least most of your limbs still attached. It’s violent, it’s gory, and it’s often quite comical if you share its macabre sense of humor.

Perhaps it should be Guts or Glory, however, as you can’t finish with both. If you’re not sure what that is, just imagine the end of any sci-fi movie in which a brave renegade pilot has to take out a large alien structure from within and/or escape from its destruction. Fluid controls and graphics will send you careening through over 15 levels of single-player action, while various challenge modes and online multiplayer with up to 8 players will keep you coming back for more.

Adventure Gorogoa This is the kind of game we love to tell you about because it’s such a unique experience. An “elegant evolution of the puzzle genre,” Gorogoa tasks the player with arranging hand-illustrated panels to create a sequence of animations that complete the game’s puzzles. It’s as much a work of art as it is a game, and is wonderfully charming throughout.

Available for Windows since December of 2017, Gorogoa is just now available for Mac. The wait is worth it, so be sure to experience this game’s fantastic visuals, intriguing puzzles and touching story. 84 Metascore 5/22/2018 Adventure No No. Adventure Subsurface Circular In Subsurface Circular, a text-based adventure game from the team behind Thomas Was Alone and Volume, you are a detective investigating a series of disappearances. Inspired by classic adventure games, this game is all about the conversations you'll have with all the characters around you.

You'll need to collect words and phrases, then use them in dialogue puzzles to solve the many mysteries around you. There is very little action in this game and some may argue the entire experience is a little short, but this is a fascinating visual novel that respects your time and intelligence.

FAR: Lone Sails is mostly about how far you can get across a dried-out seabed, overcoming obstacles and environmental hazards along the way. Keep your vehicle in working order to explore the land and learn of the civilization that left it behind. If you’re tired of post-apocalyptic games full of zombies and mutants, FAR: Lone Sails gives you one full of.nothing. Just you, your vehicle, and a story to be found. It’s a melancholic experience that sticks with you after you’re done.

Buy an empty apartment and improve the interior design, buy a dilapidated house and get busy with your tools, or buy a decent house and give it some style. Wizard of Legend offers a retro take on rogue-like dungeon crawlers, rewarding quick movement and quicker use of spells. Wizard of Legend offers over a hundred unique spells and relics that you can customize to fit your play style.

It’s not easy, but those who persist will find it rewarding. And if you’re having trouble, try the co-op version; it’s much more fun that way.

Paladins drew a lot of comparisons to Overwatch during its early access period, but has grown into quite a bit more. Teamworks is the key to victory here, rewarding players who pick a diverse group of champions (choose from “sharpshooting humans, mech-riding goblins, mystical elves and jetpack-clad dragons”) and communicate well to use them wisely. But you will also need to protect your cities by designing battleships to engage in tactical combat against hostiles. This game is an ambitious project and I’m glad to know it’s in good hands. A full cast of characters is available for you to control and set up as companions. These characters will also engage in turn-based combat where the goal is to subdue, not to kill.

Kind of a refreshing approach these days, really. As with any game coming from Klei Entertainment, the company that brought us Don’t Starve and Oxygen Not Included, among others, we will be keeping an eye on this one. Battle tactics, diverse governments, trade, and rebellions factor into the gameplay as well, and each must be properly controlled in order to successfully build your empire. With a gorgeous art style and top-notch poly graphics, Overland is game no one expected, but now everybody can't wait to play. Take on the role of a resourceful hacker as you explore and survive the terrors of Citadel Station brought on by a rogue AI. With over $1.3 Million raised on Kickstarter and a full team of industry veterans from games like Fallout: New Vegas, Mass Effect, and BioShock, this remake aims to be a worthy successor of the game we all know and love. Strategy Before Before is a survival and management game from Facepunch Studios, the developer best known for the popular Garry's Mod and Rust. The game will put you in charge of an entire tribe of prehistoric people who will have to hunt, find shelter and basically survive an unforgiving world. As your tribe grows, it will eventually evolve sophisticated hierarchies with 'beliefs and rituals'. No one knows when the game will be released but the developer has done an excellent job sharing a with its loyal fans.
